Saturday the 22th of May I had a Korean Art workshop at school and saw this as an opportunity for a blog post! I always go to school on Saturday to learn Korean and most Saturday’s it’s nothing but learning Korean. Occasionally we have work shops, the last one we had was traditional Korean music that required us to play Korean instruments. Much fun! This Saturday it was art and I for one was looking forward to it, so I took a lot of pictures, I hope you enjoy!

Welcome to Arirang School! This is the front of the building, actually my school is inside of a highschool. We’re cheap we rent classrooms.

I’m a bit early so I watch Korean kids play games. Our classes don’t start until 10.30. There is also a daycare at school along with classes for younger Koreans who live here in Holland and want to keep using their native language. Lots of kids making a lot of noise. They often run about everywhere it’s cute.

This is my desk. It doesn’t usually look this neat I am not sure why it did that day. Often there are pens everywhere, my drinks, phone and other crap that my fellow classmates keep making jokes about. But today it was neat as you can see XD

This is what we are currently working on.

Eman posing for me during break time. FYI I whined for a long time before she was willing to have her picture taken. Because apparently she looked ~horrible~ XD

Finally it was time to paint! A mother of one of the Korean kids volunteered to do it. So nice of her! This was her desk with everything set up along with examples.

Details on the art and examples 선생님 put up!

First it was practice time. She explained to us how to get various effects using water and pressure. We needed to draw circles and flowing lines. This is my first failed attempt.

Brenda is very focused on the lesson. Byungnam is lost.

Time to get to business! Our assignment was to either let our imaginations go wild or imitate one of the drawings she prepared before hand. I used my imagination. No idea what this is. 양 선생님 called it ‘cute’.

Then we got to our main challenge which was to decorate this fan. Let me tell you it’s difficult. Not only is the surface not smooth you also got once chance. If you screw up you screw up. Naturally all of us just sat there for five minutes staring at it, too afraid to try. Tricky thing is doing painting with a brush, water and ink is that if you linger at one place for too long all the ink and water gets sucked up by the paper and you end up with one big ass blob. Eventually we got over our fears and just went for it. The result? Look below.

As you can see I have quite the split personality XD One side is chaotic the other neat. And yes that’s a bug on the far side. No one seemed to see it, but it’s really a bug! This is not the complete end result but I will get back to that later.

Jorg is playing it safe, just drawing the same thing over and over again lol XD

Not sure what’s going on here. The woman on the far left was giving this brief work shop. On the far right the guy with glasses is my teacher. Funny fact: 양 선생님 is the youngest of our class. He is 19 years old. He is super smart though, always makes classes fun with debates about what’s currently going in Korea.

Byungnam’s master piece! Looks like a five year old went mad imo XD

Yumei’s fan. Hers was best hands down. Later she informed us that she used to do this as a kid. Cheater!

Byungnam continues to add stuff to his masterpiece~

양 선생님 decided he wanted to join in too and used my practice sheet for it. He also took away my brush and ink leaving me bored

The end result of our collaboration.

선생님 added some of her own flavah to my fan. She actually told me she liked my big blob best because it was such a good use of color. Lol.
After an hour it was time to return to class and continue with the lessons! 2 o’clock and I was on my way home again.

Dutch highways. For an hour and a half I had to look at that big spot of bird poop D:

When you travel in Holland this is basically what you will be looking at. Flat assed country with loads of cows XD
I ended up losing my fan. I probably left it at school I don’t know but I am sad about it because I can’t show you the complete end result
Hopefully someone found it and will return it to me!
That was my Saturday. How was yours?
